What's on in Budapest this December 2017

Hot Chocolate Festival, 30 November - 02 December, Szent Gellért Square

If you are in Budapest, Warm up with a cup of steaming hot chocolate at the lovely roof garden of the WestEnd Shopping Centre at nyugati Square. Special winter beverages made exclusively for the event from top-quality ingredients: white hot chocolate, strawberry hot chocolate, all-natural hot chocolate, lactose and sugare-free options.

Santa Claus Day, 06 December, countrywide

Jolly old Saint Nicholas makes a point of visiting Hungary early, embarking on a special trip here every December 6th to deliver presents to Magyar kids, who shine their boots the previous night and place one on the windowsill in hopes that they’ll awaken to find their shoe filled with candy and chocolates courtesy of Mikulás.

Christmas markets throughout December, multiple dates and locations

As the Yuletide season approaches, Budapest turns into a winter wonderland with myriad festive lights shining bright citywide, while small wooden stalls grow out of the ground across the city’s major public spaces, including at  or in front of the , to offer merry merchandise and flavorful Magyar meals and drinks to the festive crowds. The festive Christmas markets showcase young and old talents of Hungary, who really make their products with love, care, carrying on traditions of long years in glass blowing, knitting, wood carving, candle making, pottery, leather trade (belt making, bag making, shoe making, etc.), traditional Hungarian embroidery and lace work, etc. Don’t expect dazzling handicrafts, just nice and pleasant gifts, most of which make nice little presents, unassuming lovely gifts.

Santa Speedo Run, 10 December, Gozsdu Courtyard

Every December, a vast team of underdressed Santas conquers the streets of District VII to run through the capital’s central lanes and thoroughfares, each of them wearing only a piece of swimwear to create a surreal wintery scene. All this is part of an initiative to support children in need. The best thing of all is that anyone can join the icy run.

Open Air Winter Festival, 02-31 December, Müpa/Palace of Arts

Although there isn’t an christmas market at the Winter Festival at the Palace of Arts, it’s a wonderful event to soak up some festive atmosphere and culture. An ice rink on 400 sqm and large tent next to it for some exciting programs and a Melody Wheel – an interactive music box – are the highlights of the festival.

Outdoor Ice Rink Skating in the City Park

The huge open air Ice Rink of Budapest is on the top 10 list of Lonely Planet as one of the best places in Europe in winter time, paired with a warm bath in the Budapest baths, and a visit to the cool and hip ruin bars, some of the best bars in Budapest. If you want to feel the great space in a breathtaking place, the Ice Rink Palace in the City Park with its enormous open air Skating Rink is a must see, must do.
