    Budapest Airport to City

When leaving for a trip, oftentimes one of the most disorienting, confusing moments is when you take your first steps off the airplane. All of a sudden, you’re on your own, amid a rush of people, in a new, unfamiliar place. And if that weren’t enough, usually the very place you’ve landed, the airport, is a significant distance from the city center, meaning that now you need to figure out how to make your way to your accommodation.

While this may sound intimidating, don’t worry! If you’re a first-time visitor to Budapest, the Hungarian capital offers a number of easy, convenient, and affordable travel options to get you where you need to be. Whether you’re coming to the city looking for adventure and new experiences, passing through for business, or anything in between, here are some of the ways that you can easily make your way from Budapest’s Ferenc Liszt Airport into the city.

Budapest Airport to City: Transportation Options

Budapest Airport to City: Public Transportation

By far the cheapest way to get into the heart of Budapest is to make use of the city’s robust public transportation network, the BKK. While this may seem like a bit of a daunting task upon first arriving in the Hungarian capital, in reality the public transportation system is easy to use, while monitors at the airport bus stop tell you exactly when you can expect your next bus to arrive.

In particular, there are two lines that you can take in order to get from the Budapest Airport to the City. The first, and simplest option, is to take the 100E express bus. This line, a recent addition to the capital’s bus service, goes directly from the airport to the city center, making just a few stops at Calvin Square, Astoria, and Ferenc Deák Square.

The other option is to take the 200E express bus to the Kőbánya-Kispest Metro station. From there, you can take the M3 metro line to get into the heart of Budapest. While a longer trip, this route is a good option for those who are staying a bit outside the city center, as there are more stops along the way.

Budapest Airport to City: Shuttle Services

If you’re in more of a hurry, or have large pieces of luggage with you that won’t easily fit on a bus, then buying a shuttle ticket might be your best bet. If you are traveling alone, or if there are only two of you, then the shuttle will always be cheaper than a taxi, while still being significantly faster than a bus. In order to take a shuttle, which will make stops at major locations throughout the city center, simply follow the signage out of the terminal to the shuttle kiosk. There, you can purchase tickets and get more information from the shuttle company’s employees.

    Budapest Airport to City: Taxis

Finally, obviously the simplest, and fastest way to make your way from the Budapest airport to the city is by taking a taxi. In fact, if you have a group of 3 or more, taking a taxi is actually less expensive than taking a shuttle, since the shuttle service’s tickets are sold on a per-person basis.

In any case, if you do decide to take a taxi, you should be aware of a few things. For one, this service will cost you roughly $40 USD, perhaps a bit more if you’re headed to Buda. In addition, you should make sure that you only use an official taxi service. While they may seem cheaper, ‘alternative’ taxis have been known to cheat tourists out of their money in a variety of ways.

    Taxi Airport to City

In order to hire a taxi from the airport, simply leave the terminal and follow the signs for the taxi stand. Once there, tell the dispatcher the address of where you’d like to go, and she will give you the number of the taxi that you’ll be taking. When your number pulls up to the curb, simply give the driver your receipt, and get in. You’ll pay your driver on arrival, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get a chance to see some of the beauties of Budapest on your way into the city.
